THE NEW CRAFT OF FILM PRODUCTION
Conceptualization of the Exhibition

This exhibition has been conceptualized taking the American Museum as a model. As the permanent exhibition already covers all aspects of film production, this exhibition would serve as an update in recent developments, dealing specifically with the impact caused by the advent of desktop software tools in the film production process.

At the same time, the exhibition can be mounted on a stand-alone scheme, and it could be converted in a traveling exhibition that could be hosted in educational institutions and museums around the world.

The exhibition will feature six different sections: an introduction, four sections based on a case study, and a conclusion.

Audience

The American Museum of the Moving Image has two main audience groups: The first one is composed by school groups from the tri-state area that regularly visit the museum on week days, ranging from 4th grade up to high school. The second group is composed by the general public, which includes a mix of New York City residents of all ages, young back pack travelers, and general tourism in a minor extent.

Curatorial Approach

Since the early seventies, the film industry has relied on computers to assist the film production process in different ways, such as a technical aid to produce special effects or to generate images. However, this exhibition is not focusing on isolated custom-made technological improvements, its object of study is the application of widely available desktop software tools that have participated in improving and helping evolve different processes in film production. In this regards, the following guidelines have been defined:

Educational Approach

Media literacy is a fundamental part of understanding our world. With a pervasive influence from Film and TV, it is necessary to provide students and public in general, with opportunities to understand how the contents transmitted are produced, and to have criteria to be able to deconstruct contents too.

Strategy:

Experience Design Approach

The design guidelines for this exhibition have been based on current interactive exhibits from the American Museum of the Moving Image. Each one of these exhibits refers to a particular process in film production.
